Fighting the R-Word

Date: Wed, 1 Apr 2009 10:48:55 -0700 (PDT) - Is it ever OK to use the word "retard" in casual conversation? Hundreds of high school and college students across the country today have joined together to answer with an emphatic "No!"
From booths and tabletops in more than 700 school hallways and university student centers, volunteers are asking people to "spread the word to end the word" and sign a petition at www.r-word.org promising to stop using "retard" in everyday speech.
I know their efforts will be met with considerable eye rolling. There was a time when my eyes would've rolled as well. Retard, after all, is just a word, right? And if it's just being used in jest, well, what's the big deal?
